Game 5: Hutt River Dedication vs Ray White's Dirty Dozen
Hutt River Dedication 7/182 def Ray White's Dirty Dozen 177
Hutt River went into the final day of play needing a win and a good run rate to get a place. Ray White's Dirty Dozen batted first, and got off to a solid start, scoring at over six an over until Jake Sluiter got the first breakthrough. The score was 1/38, and once Phil Barker was taken out of the attack the next three wickets came quickly. Sluiter and debutante Haydn Falconer bowled brilliantly, taking the score to 4/66.
Unfortunately Falconer dropped opener Mark Kerr, and Kerr looked determined to capitalise. Kerr started belting the bowlers to all corners of the park, especially Geoff Pascoe, who bowled terribly. The fifth wicket proved elusive, and Hutt River fans could feel third place slipping from their grasp. Finally, with the score on 147, Jarryd Mills struck, getting Kerr caught behind in his first spell of bowling for the tournament. Phil Barker was given a chance to redeem himself late in the innings, and showed his true skills by cleaning up the tail. Dedication fans held their breath when a catch was hit to Chris Hope off Barker, but Hope put his deep seeded hatred of Barker aside and took the catch. This put Barker one wicket ahead of Hope for the tournament, with one wicket left to get. Barker had a whole over to the opposition number 10 and 11 batsmen, but failed to dismiss either - a performance hardly befitting of the player of the carnival. Hope bowled the next over and after goading the batsmen for five balls, got the final wicket with his last ball.
Hutt River's run chase got off to a flyer, with Haydn Falconer treating the opposition bowlers with contempt. Unfortunately Jarryd Mills was unable to stay around with him, being dismissed for 2 and bringing Phil Barker to the crease. Falconer and Barker put on 42 for the second wicket, putting Dedication in a very strong position. Barker played another strong innings, combining with Joel McMahon, Geoff Pascoe and Tyler Hankinson to push Dedication to within 20 runs of victory. With the score on 158 however, Barker decided that he had done enough to get himself three votes, and let a ball crash into his pads on middle stump, leaving the team in a very precarious position. Luckily, Tyler Hankinson and Adam Burke were more concerned than Barker about the fate of the team, and guided Dedication to victory in just under 45 overs.
