Game 3: Kangarilla vs Hutt River Dedication
Kangarilla 6/99 tied with Hutt River Dedication 5/99
Hutt River again bowled first in the second Twenty20 match on day 2. Phil Barker bowled a magnificent opening spell, starting with a maiden and conceding just 4 runs from his first 3 overs. Scarby didn't make the trip to Mildura for Willowfest 2011, and without their spiritual leader, the Kangarilla batsmen appeared to be playing without any real purpose. Despite not losing many wickets, they struggled to make an impact on the scoreboard. Tyler Hankinson entered the attack at first change, and conceded less runs in a three over spell than he normally concedes in a single over. As Kangarilla emerged from their Scarby-less stupor, and tried to lift the scoring rate, the wickets started falling. Geoff Pascoe twice allowed batsmen to hit him for six, before taking advantage of their new found confidence to dismiss them. Jake Sluiter again bowled well at the death to keep Kangarilla to 99 from their 20 overs.
The run chase started well thanks to another solid opening partnership between Jarryd Mills and Adam Burke. Phil Barker at first drop played another solid innings, cementing him as early favourite for the MDP award. Barker, in combination with Joel McMahon and Tyler Hankinson kept the scoreboard ticking over, hovering near the required run rate. When Barker was dismissed, the scoreboard showed 75, with Hutt River needing just over a run a ball for victory. Hankinson and Jake Sluiter tested the Kangarilla fielders, taking some quick runs to get Dedication within 7 runs of victory at the commencement of the final over. The first five balls yielded 5 runs leaving Sluiter needing two runs off the last ball for victory. Hitting the ball to mid-off, Sluiter and Hankinson attempted to run two, but Sluiter was run out attempting the second leaving the scores tied.
